Ringneck Dove
Ringneck doves and Mourning doves are a poor choice for ceremonial release.
While they are small and beautiful, they lack homing skills to return safely home,
and they lack survival skills for the wild. Ringneck doves tend to dart away in a beeline rather than circle as Release Duvs do. |
Release Duv
When someone refers to "trained doves" they are often speaking
of Release Duvs. Release Duvs are an excellent choice for ceremonial release.
Smaller and prettier than white racing pigeons, Release Duvs have been especially bred to
circle up and trained to return safely home. Traits for which the Release Duv has been bred include
endurance, tameness, small size, beauty, homing skill, and circling skill. |
White Racing Pigeon
Racing pigeons are bred to race home as quickly as possible. They tend
to circle less, if at all. Racing pigeons are sprinters, tending to be bigger, more
muscled, and more difficult to handle.
